TimB
Hey everyone, I've been reading about the Tropheus Ikola and apparently you're meant to keep them in groups of 12 or more. I don't really want to put them in a 55 gal but has anyone ever kept smaller groups of them? And would a few be alright in a 55gal? Thanks in advance
Link2Hell
Timit's not the capacity of the tank it's the dimensions that aremore important IMOso what size is the tank
Jamesmac
Hi tim I've been breeding trophs for years and the more trophs in the tank the happier they will beDon't recommend a few minimum of 10 2 makes 8 females will make a great colonyAnd ikola are a beautiful fishMake sure the tank I well filtered and keep ur parameters around ph8.4 to 8.6Kh 15 gh 18And u can keep 10 in a 55 gallon good size would be a 4ft by18 by 18Great fish never boring Cheers
dogboy
everyone has an opinion on tropheus, for me 5 foot minimum, or a 4X2X2 , 20 plus for a happy colony.....unless they are duboisi then 4 foot min and a smalller colony.....more fish + more room = more successalso depends on the individual fish in the colony, i know of people breeding trios in a 3 foot and also of a single male destroying a colony of 15+ in a big tank...... TimB
I am wanting to put them in a 4X2X2, (not sure how many gall's) and 2 males and 8 females sounds good.(possibly more if advised) But I am open to all other opinions as well. Cheers, Tim
Link2Hell
4' x 2' x 2' is a good size for a colony10-20 would be fine in that

Wizza
What's the easiest way to sex tropheus? I have a 5ft tank with 30 Bemba reds and was wondering if I should thin out the colony and get a good ratio of male and female. I also have a 4ft tank with 26 moliro in it and was wanting to do the same.
Link2Hell
the only 100% way is to vent sexif you know the fish you could visually sex them but this would mostlikely be about 80-90% correct over the quantity you mention so longas they are adults by head, general body and fin shape plus howthey act in the tankjuveniles is by vent at min of 5cm size from memory
hph
I have a breeding pair of kachese in a 4fter that has a mouthful every 8 weeks. Just luck I guess they don't kill each other.
