ADA is quite a highly regarded brand of equipment and products overseas. It is the brand started by Takashi Amano, the creator of the aquariums in the Nature Aquarium World series of books (absolutely exquisite planted aquariums) ADA gallery. When you see the price of an ADA product you must also take into the account the prestige associated with the label.

To be crass, its like a $400 pair of designer PDC jeans rolleyes.gif (jeans I really cant understand but ADA hmmm...).

There are other products (I feel) that are of equal quality but in essence you are paying for a name, if you want the name pay the price.

My favourite ADA product has got to be what is essentially a one-way air valve for about $130 AUD (but I must admit its pretty sexy as far as valves go LOL.gif ) Cabochon Ruby.

Apologies mods for the unsanctioned links but I though it was on topic enough and not necessarily plugging a product. Remove if need be smile.gif

Well explained wormboy.

ADA is more concerned about the asthetics of the aquarium, to my knowledge they don't make their own filters (From photos I believe Amano prefers Eheims) or food (they repack someone's food, probably Hikari).

Quality of the products are very high, but there are heaps of copies coming out now, often at 20% of the ADA price......of course at lower quality level as well! laugh.gif

Also expensive because there is only one importer and retailer in Aus.

some people prefer to buy a sony tv, some prefer to buy a panasonic tv yet they work the same and last as long as each other. the difference is that the person with the sony tv like to show that he can afford a sony.

Better example would be Sony and Viewsonic/Panavision! LOL.gif

When I say lower quality, its not much lower but perhaps just enough for people to feel they need to buy the "real" thing.

Another example would be the eheim/fluval/jbl/sera vs pro-aqua/aqua pro/aqua one/weipro

ADA is actually not an unheard brand...they have been already in the overseas markets for a long period of time. Anyway, ADA is somehow different to eheim, fluval, or jbl...etc due to the fact that this brand is more specialised in providing products for planted tanks rather than just a brand providing a range of general aquarium products. I've bought some ADA fertilizers from overseas and used in my planted tank, they were very effective to get the plants growing healthier without algae bloom if use in a correct way.

Some friends of mine in overseas are using ADA products *ONLY*, it's because they use these products to aquascape their planted tanks and then take photos to enter the ADA competition once every year.

ADA cannister Its a relatively new line to my understanding, all stainless steel jobs. I think it is to fit in with the whole "form as well as function" philosophy. If you do a net search for the ADA website (europe is probably best) you can find their catalogues.

It is essentially an unfair comparison to compare ADA with Eheim, Fluval, Sera etc etc...

ADA is a specialised product line targeted at only the aquatic plant enthusiast and really for keepers of low pH, soft water tanks (as far as I know). So to put it bluntly, if you keep Malawi or Tanganyikan cichlids, then ADA is not for you.

ADA is not new, it is the hottest product on the market in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and starting to take the US and European market by storm now. It has been around for well over 10 years. The reason IMO, why for a long time while Takashi Amano was revered as the Nature Aquarium aquascape artist, his products were never popularised in the western world was because of the lack of English language instructions and directions. (everything was in Japanese!!). This however is changing since ADA have distribution networks in Europe, US and very recently Australia. The English literature is coming in thick and fast. Takashi Amano himself is now a regular columnist in the US fish magazine TFH.

The ADA product line is just solely and wholy concentrated on trying to keep aquatic plants in the optimum condition. It is incorrect that ADA does not have a canister filter or developed their own line of food.

ADA's canister filters are made of polished stainless steel, weighs a bloody ton, uses one of the most efficent (read as economical, the turn over rate is fantastic and the power consumption is low) and reliable Japanese made water pumps. The pump motor itself is located externatlly and is purposely built to never be in close contact with the water in the canister itself. This is because in NA planted tanks, Takashi wants to maintain the temperature of the water around about the 23-24degrees C because many aquatic plants like mosses do not do well in water that is too hot.

ADA's fish food is designed to not affect the water quality of the planted aquarium and has very minimum amount of phosphate (which can cause algae problems).

Basically everything in his line of product is thought of carefully on how to maximise the health of aquarium plants, make it as easy as possible for the user to achieve the results he does following the simple instructions and like all the high end Japanese products, it must use the best quality materials in it's making and be designed as delicately and artistically as possible. The basic principle of ADA is that it's products must achieve the results it promises and at the same time ooze CLASS.

Class however, never comes at a bargain.

Couple of ADA sites for you to have a read about the ADA philosophy and their products in ENGLISH.

As far as I understand, ADA in Australia is meant to go nationwide to all stores.

Well there you go, I stand corrected.

Though these sure look like Eheims to me at ADA HQ! zipit.gif

The stainless steel units look like the very old school "classic" series eheims (think pre 90's)

As for ADA going nation wide, you wouldn't have a hand in that would you Kev? woot.gif

I think "CLASS all the way" is a great way to put it Kev. Nice speel.

Yup, an east coast and a west coast distributor are currently being stocked and as far as I know (for WC at least) the ADA line of products will soon be available to any store that wants to carry them .
