patchy
i hear you can substitute Tea tree oil for for the catjeput oil in melafix. However i seem to have found some 100% catjeput oil in a bottle, dont know about it's authenticity but it's for relieving aches and pains and smells like the stuff. I'm guessing it should be safe to make up a 1-5% v/v solution and dose like melafix (5ml:40l). How many people have success with this DIY formula? cheers
Ash
I've used Alternafix with good results on pop-eye, torn fins, open wounds etc I followed the recipie on the SCP page & I use Thursday Plantation 100% tea tree oil. some of the other brands are "watered down" with other chemicals so I haven't tried any other brands. BaZ
I use the DIY one and find it works well. Heaps cheaper!
catcher
Yeah me as well, I use cajaput oil from the health foods store, works well, always does what it's supposed to and at a fraction of the price. The only thing you have to do is shake the crap out of the bottle before using it to ensure correct dilution with no seperation. glenn
dd0s
I ahve also made up my own. The problem i found is that every one says to use "Tea Tree Oil" When i went looking i found there a many many different types of tea tree oil from many different species of plants. ATM i am using Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alternifolia) and it works weel. Its doesn't quite smell the same but seems to do the trick. Is this where the ALTERN in ALTERNafix came from? Or is it just a coincidence.
Ash
I believe that's part of it, and that it's an alternative fix The stuff I use is 100% Melaleuca alternifolia oil made into a 1% solution with dechlorinated water. As Glenn said, shake it very well before use.
dd0s
1%?? i was told to use 1ml per liter which would make the mixure 1:1000 instead of 1:
Ash
um, nope. 1:100 ratio 1ml oil to 100ml water.
YeW
Yup: Alternafix = the alternative version of Melafix - made using M. alternifolia oil . Twice the alternative :D! I use a 1:100 (ie: 10ml tea tree oil & 990ml H20) stock soln. Apply at a rate of 5ml stock soln. / 40L aquarium water .
patchy
sweet, i guess i'll be mixing some up very soon. In good time too as i was gone for a week and my brother was 'too busy' to feed the fish for a week. The clown loach got hungry and started nipping some of the other fish, time to see for myself if this stuff really works....
