  1. Do you want the catfish for clean up or as a feature fish? Good old bristlenose are hard to beat for algae clean up, common plecos or gibbiceps will be able to handle living with your cichlids but won't do much algae eating or clean up
  2. Hi Bob, if you are in Sydney you could try Jason's Cichlids. https://www.youtube.com/@JasonsCichlids I'm not sure if Jason is selling directly to the public any more or if he is only wholesaling but you could give him a try
  3. Are you talking about a tank inside a house or an outdoor pond? Inside a well-insulated house, I reckon you'd almost get away without a heater year round. I'm in Canberra, so considerably colder, I turn the heaters off November-ish and leave them off until late March/April depending on the weather. Yesterday my two tanks were both sitting at 22 degrees. A few factors to consider would be, size of the tank (large tank = larger thermal mass = less fluctuation), thickness of glass, and house's insulation.
  4. If the male betta has long flowing fins, I'd be worried about the angelfish and tetras nipping at the betta's fins
  5. I'd dilute the bleach in water using just enough bleach that you can smell it. As long as you thoroughly rinse the tank afterwards to remove any residual bleach and use a declorinator like Prime to break down any bleach that might be left you should be fine. When you're finished you shouldn't be able to smell any bleach. Make sure it is home brand or a cheap bleach that is just straight bleach with no added whiteners, scents or other additives.
  6. Is it possible that the eggs that are getting fungus haven't been fertilized?

  8. I can't help with any information about West African cichlids in Australia but I did watch an interesting lecture on Youtube a while ago. The talk is about fish diversity in the lower Congo river, the lecturer talks about a species of riverine lamproline that lives in very deep sections of the river and is very rarely seen alive.
  9. https://www.youtube.com/@australianbiotopes4563 Good videos of Australian native biotopes up north
  10. @Link2Hell The last time I was a member was circa 2008, before children and life got in the way of regular fish trips up the Hume. I'm doing fish runs to Sydney every few months lately, if I was smarter I'd time these to coincide with a NSWCS meetings.
  11. Glad to hear Andrew is doing better.
  12. WT Fish in Wetherill Park usually has a good range of African cichlids in stock. A lot of their fish are sourced from local breeders, I can't vouch for the quality of everything they sell but their Saulosi and Rusties are top notch 😉

    Filter size

I have a Fluval 405 on a 2 foot cube (60 x 60 x 60cm) approx 216 litres. The flow from the outlet is very strong, I think a 407 would be overkill on a tank your size. I believe that the way Eheim rate the flow of their cannister filters is different to other manufacturers. Some manufacturers test flow rates with an empty cannister. Ultimately it depends on what you want to use the filter for, if it's purely for mechanical filtration a higher flow rate is more important. If you want to use it for biological filtration too then the amount of time that bacteria is in contact with waste is important and a higher flow rate might not be optimal.
  14. Does that mean Andrew's not thinking about opening another shop again soon?
