  2. Mollies have been smashed, maybe no such thing as dither fish for my tank
  3. Last week
  4. Ty L2H, thinking L337, supposed to be hardy and a bit more active, finding in my tank at least the mollies are eating any algae that forms
  5. Gibbeceps and common plecos grow large L001 same family as the Gibbicep be grows smaller depending on how much you want to spend will dictate other options Ancistrus are the starting point with common bristlenose also in caliico or albino in short or longfin, Peppermints, Orange spots and L144 blue eyes from there they get dearer
  6. Hey Skippy, feature fish maybe, I have added some mollies so far so good as dither fish, shaky at first but now they seem ok, am thinking either pleco or cuckoo catfish, the latter might be more active, can't stick with c American theme with catfish unfortunately
  7. There is no indication I can find on the shelf life for these systems. I have seen posts saying you should replace every 12 months but no detail or data to back up the recommendation. I use my LFS. Test my water with my kit, note the results then take a water sample to my LFS. If their results match mine I figure the home kit is still accurate.
  8. In my opinion most hobby grade UV systems are useless and probably just snake oil. The UV systems provided in canister filters are simply ticking the box providing UV, in reality they do nothing. You are doing nothing wrong except providing excess light promoting algae growth.
  9. I have a 6' 300 litre tank with mainly peacocks. Originally I was running an Aqua One Nautilus 1100 and a Sunsun HW303A. Regular water changes and replacement of the filter wool kept the tank clean. After the Nautilus developed a leak (o-ring) I replaced it with a Sunsun HW-303B with a UV light. The UV was promoted as the next step or additional water purification system. I added the media from the Nautilus and what was needed from the supplied Sunsun media to fill the trays. Within a week I had an outbreak of stringy green algae. The HW-303A and HW-303B are rated at 1400L/H so it would at worst be turning the water over three times per hour. I was under the impression the UV would provide extra protection from algae blooms like this. I have since turned off the UV but I am still having problems with algae in the tank. The walls of the tank seem to get a heavier lining of algae than I have ever had before. This week I have deep vacuumed the substrate. I didn't clean the filters as they still appear to have good flow. I have now removed all of the rocks to dry in the sun and kill off the algae. When cleaning filters I fill a 30 litre tub with water siphoned from the aquarium. The sponges and media are rinsed in the tub and filter wool is replaced. Only one filter is cleaned at a time. Water is tested regularly and show no adverse results. To verify the accuracy of my water tests I have the water tested at my LFS evey 6 - 8 months. They always come back with the same results I get. What am I missing or doing wrong.
  10. Do you want the catfish for clean up or as a feature fish? Good old bristlenose are hard to beat for algae clean up, common plecos or gibbiceps will be able to handle living with your cichlids but won't do much algae eating or clean up

  12. Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good catfish for a 200L tank with 1 nicaraguan cichlid, 1 jack Dempsy and 1 convict, or dither fish. I know I'm pushing the limits of my 200 litre tank but may move on a cichlid, they are about 5cm each now and will see how they colour up. Jack and Nic are my faves.

    Glass shimp

Where can i catch some shrimp?
  16. Thanks for that Bruce. Appreciate your insights.. will see how I go .. but it seems there are 100s and 1000s of them in the tanks ..
  17. Almost impossible without thoroughly stripping down the tank, drying it out and all the media, substrate and decorations that are in the tank. I’ve tried to keep tanks clean of them. Only my fry tanks that have no substrate appear to be free of them. Clown loaches and other loaches will eat them and can really suppress the population but are unlikely to eradicate them. Loaches may also affect your breeding success of substrate spawners etc. I’ve given up at the moment and the populations have exploded. They shouldn’t affect the breeding success of substrate spawners, in my experience.
  18. Thanks Bruce.. they are everywhere.. any ideas how I can get rid of them? Of course I don’t want to mess up the tanks and the fish .. any ideas would be appreciated.. I am at a loss how they ended up in there .. I have not introduced any new fish or plants for possibly near 12 months ..
  19. Hi Folks Just noticed 100s of little snails in my tank .. I have never seen them before.. during the day time I have not seen them at all. Tonight when I I came home decided to check the tank. Please find attached a photo for your reference. Any help would be appreciated.
  20. Hi Bob, if you are in Sydney you could try Jason's Cichlids. https://www.youtube.com/@JasonsCichlids I'm not sure if Jason is selling directly to the public any more or if he is only wholesaling but you could give him a try

  23. Just like to say thanks to the club and all its members for a fantastic night out. I managed to score a lot of 11 tropheus duboisi for a good price and some other tangs and some haps all up there was plenty of variety good to see. with the early finish I made it home by 1:00 and had good trip home all fish made it home safely.
  24. Over 500 lots issued and only about 320 entered in for auction, which is again a terrible return rate of lots . Auctioning finished around 7 pm and early home Endlers, guppy varieties, shrimp varieties, a good range of tangs....lots of chewere and Cyrtocara moorii ( blue dolphin) Good variety of catfish as well as some larger rarer haps , not seen for some time ...overall a good variety and prices
  25. thats what i wanted apistos what kind
  26. Also quite a few lots of apistos
  27. I think they said about 100 lots issued for the auction didnt show. I think about 300 and some lots went through. Lots of the usual bristlenose varieties and electric yellows. Alot of chewere and moorii and a few lots of calvus. Dont recall any lake victoria stuff go through and a few americans like angels, blue eyes, blue acara and brasiliensis. I think the big purchase buy were 11 tropheus that went for around $200. Also some rare plecos which were passed in due to not meeting reserve. I hadnt been to a major auction for some time. Enjoyed it but unfortunately not much of what i was looking out for. Congrats to club committee and volunteers who are still doing a great job running it.
